Day 1 TOKYO (Fri 31 March)

Arrive at Tokyo airport and after clearing customs you will be greeted by your driver and transferred to our 5 star hotel, The Imperial Hotel Tokyo, where you check-in for 3 nights. The official check-in time is after 2:00pm.

Day 2 TOKYO (Sat 01 April)

For our first full day we start off with a morning sightseeing tour of Tokyo on a chartered coach, through Ginza streets, Imperial palace and Asakusa Temple where we stroll down the colourful Nakamise shopping street. Lunch is at one of the finest Michelin starred Japanese traditional restaurants or at one of the famous Iron Chef restaurants in Ginza (or similar). In the evening we will all gather for a Welcome Cocktail with a light dinner at a private lounge at the hotel overlooking the Imperial Palace at sunset.

Day 3 TOKYO (Sun 02 April)

After a relaxing breakfast, we meet at the lobby to enjoy a slow paced walking tour beginning with a short metro ride. We will visit Chidorigafuchi the mote of the Imperial Palace for cherry blossom viewing and then return to the hotel for a Teppan Yaki lunch. The remainder of the day is free at leisure. Perhaps follow your tour leader to the Meiji shrine and the Harajuku, promenade, where Tokyo’s old & new cultures meet. End with a walk down the trendy Omotesando and Harajuku areas. If you’re interested in art, why not visit a lovely small private art gallery, Nezu Museum with a fine building and beautiful gardens. Evening, follow your leader to the local businessman’s district and enjoy local street food.

Day 4 TOKYO – MT. FUJI RESORT – KYOTO (Mon 03 April)

This morning we travel to Mount Fuji and Hakone National Park. Enjoy a cruise across Lake Ashi and ride the ropeway (gondola) up to Mt Komagatake. After lunch at a local restaurant, we travel by Bullet Train to Kyoto, home to the finest art, crafts and culture in Japan. Check in for 4 nights of luxury accommodation.

Day 5 KYOTO (Tue 04 April)

Today we take a Kyoto sightseeing tour, this morning visiting the UNESCO world heritage sites, the Golden Pavilion (Kinkakuji) and Nijo Castle. Kinkakuji is a beautiful Zen temple once the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga in northern Kyoto , and whose top two storeys are completely covered in gold leaf. Nijo castle (built in 1603) as the Kyoto residence of the first Shogun, Tokugawa, is one of the best surviving examples of feudal Japan’s castle palace architecture. This evening, we enjoy a sumptuous dinner at a traditional restaurant that has
won 7 consecutive Michelin awards. During dinner we will be accompanied by a Geisha, who will perform a special traditional dance for us and with whom we can chat.

Day 6 KYOTO (Wed 05 April)

After a relaxing breakfast we will enjoy a walking tour of Kiyomizu temple, nestled in a mountain on the east of the city and overlooking the city. Part of the fun of visiting Kiyomizu temple is the approach to the temple along the steep and busy lanes of Kyoto’s old Atmospheric Higashiyama district. Lunch is at a fabulous traditional Tempura restaurant where the meal is cooked in front of you and in the evening we will enjoy a special dinner of Kobe beef at a local fine cuisine restaurant with a view of cherry blossoms.

Day 7 KYOTO (Thu 06 April)

Start the morning with a stroll along The Philosopher’s Path, a pleasant stone path lined with about 500 cherry trees, through the northern part of Kyoto’s Higashiyama district. Visit also a Zen Garden. Mid afternoon, we will meet a monk who will give us a talk about Japanese philosophy and religion, way of life. Traditional Kaiseki style dinner served tonight.

Day 8 KYOTO – KINTAI-KYO – HIROSHIMA (Fri 07 April)

After a leisurely morning we will catch a Bullet train to Hiroshima and travel on to Kintaikyo, little visited by western tourists, to visit the Kintaikyo Bridge famously immortalized in Ukiyoe paintings. We will catch a gondola to the mountaintop Iwakuni Castle from which we can also get a bird’s eye view of the valley. Check in at Sheraton Hotel in Hiroshima for 2 nights. This evening, dinner is not organised but why not enjoy quiet drinks and nibblies at your own pace in the executive lounge..

Day 9 HIROSHIMA – MIYAJIMA – HIROSHIMA (Sat 08 April)

Breakfast today is in the Club Lounge and, after another leisurely start we will visit Miyajima Island in The Inland Sea, to enjoy sightseeing around the Sacred Goddess Miyajima Floating Shrine and the world famous Torii gate. Mid afternoon we return to Hiroshima, visit the Peace Memorial Park and have a guided tour of the park visiting Hiroshima Peace Museum. For dinner tonight you will have the opportunity of drinks at the club lounge and for dinner a buffet at the hotel restaurant is also organised.

Day 10 HIROSHIMA – HIMEJI – OSAKA (Sun 09 April)

After checking out from the hotel, we travel to Himeji by Bullet Train and then on to Osaka. We will visit the famous majestic Himeji Castle, considered Japan’s most spectacular. Unlike many other Japanese castles, Himeji Castle was never destroyed in wars or fires and survives in its original form. It is both a national treasure and a world heritage site. We then travel on to Osaka and upon arrival check in for 2 nights at the Imperial Hotel Osaka.

Day 11 OSAKA – MT. KOYA – OSAKA (Mon 10 April)

Today we each have a choice of two tour options
Choice 1. Mt. Koya full day tour by train. Mt. Koya is a World Heritage site due to its more than 1000 year old teaching and meditation sites. Smooth headed monks in colourful robes, mist covered mountains and wooden temples create a serene and spiritual place.
Choice 2. Osaka sightseeing tour visiting Osaka castle and the amazing five-storey-deep Kaiyukan Aquarium followed by some downtown window shopping – or the real thing.

Day 12 OSAKA – KANAZAWA (Tue 11 April)

This morning we travel to Kanazawa by train. We begin our exploration of Kanazawa with an afternoon tour which includes the old district of Higashiyama; a Geisha district; Kutani pottery workshops where you can see a demonstration by a master potter; the former samurai
residential area and one of Japan’s most famous gardens, Kenrokuen garden. Check in for 2 nights at the Hotel Nikko Kanazawa.

Day 13 KANAZAWA – TAKAYAMA – SHIRAKAWAGO – KANAZAWA (Wed 12 April)

Not too far from Kanazawa are the ancient towns and villages of Takayama and Shirakawago. Takayama’s isolation has allowed Edo period streets, lined with tiny shops, museums and eating places, to survive to this day. We will take lunch at local fine restaurant in Takayama and after spending some time taking in the local sights we will travel on to Shirakawago, a small world heritage listed village, nestled in the mountains beside a pristine mountain river. We stroll around this fascinating village with its famous thatched roofs for a while before heading
back to Kanazawa for a traditional Kaga Kaiseki cuisine dinner.

Day 14 KANAZAWA – TOKYO (Thu 13 April)

We travel back to Tokyo today by the new Hokuriku Bullet Train line, “Gran Class” arriving midday. Upon arrival we transfer to the Imperial Hotel Tokyo and check in for 1 night. The remainder of the day is free to either relax or explore a bit of Ginza. Your tour coordinator will help you organise your activities. Relax this evening with farewell drinks and light meal at the Imperial lounge.

Day 15 TOKYO (Fri 14 April)

Today is our last day in Japan, so you might wish to do some last minute souvenir hunting or an optional half day activity. Late afternoon, we check out from the hotel and leave for Haneda or Narita airport by private transfer service.
