Day 1 TOKYO (Sun 19 MAR)

Transfer from Narita or Haneda airport to hotel in Tokyo by private chartered car. Check in at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo after 2:00 pm.

Day 2 TOKYO – FUKUOKA (Mon 20 MAR)

This morning we enjoy a half day scenic coach tour of many Tokyo icons, including a visit to Asakusa temple drive through the Imperial Palace, National Diet Building, Tokyo Sky tree, Tsukiji Fish market etc. Tokyo and of life, colour, sights and sounds, great shopping districts. After lunch, we transfer to Haneda airport to catch a flight for Fukuoka. Check in at the Grand Hyatt Hotel for 2 nights. Welcome drinks at hotel.

Travel to Arita pottery village. Centuries ago, a potter from Korea discovered a fine-quality white porcelain mineral nearby in Mt. Arita-Izumi-yama leading to the development of the pottery village, Arita. Now the cradle of porcelain manufacturing in Japan, Arita is a quiet town secreted in the mountains. Visit master potter’s workshop. Return to hotel. Evening, enjoy local food of Hakata, ramen noodles.

This morning we travel by Bullet train to Shin-Iwakuni and visit Kintaikyo. Kintai Bridge is an historical wooden arch bridge, in the city of Iwakuni, in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The iconic bridge was built in 1673, spanning the Nishiki River in a series of five wooden arches. It is located at the foot of Mt. Yokoyama, at the top of which lies Iwakuni Castle. Visit also Hiroshima and Miyajima Island to enjoy the famous floating Itsukushima Shrine and Torii gate. Then on to the Peace Park to visit the Hiroshima Peace Museum.We travel on to Okayama and stay for 2 nights at the Hotel Granvia Okayama.

We start the day with a ferry trip on the Inland Sea to Naoshima Island. An Island of art, blessed with natural beauty and attracting worldwide attention for its many contemporary art museums, Naoshima was selected by sightseeing magazine Conde Naste as one of the “seven places in the world you should see next.” We will visit the inspiring Chichu museum, both a museum and a work of art in its own right. Lunch at local restaurant, after which we will enjoy the Art House Project and outdoor art exhibition.

Day 6 OKAYAMA – KYOTO (Fri 24 MAR)

Today travel to Kyoto. We take a Kyoto half day tour visiting the Golden Pavilion, Nijo Castle. We check in to the Kyoto Hotel Okura for 3 nights. After enjoying Teppan-yaki dinner, we stroll to the Gion Geisha district, familiar to many travellers from movies such as “Memoirs of a Geisha”.

Day 7 KYOTO (Sat 25 MAR)

Early morning, visit the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine flea market with 300 stores including antiques, kimonos, prints, and interesting local hot snack foods. We visit the Gion Geisha district again, but this time during the daytime and will enjoy lunch at a former geisha house for a traditional Japanese meal. Afternoon, visit Kiyomizu temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which overlooks the city. This massive wooden temple is very impressive, built on the side of a mountain, many stories tall, but built without a single nail. The temple itself is wonderful to contemplate, but you will also enjoy the approach to the temple along the steep and busy lanes of the atmospheric Higashiyama, with myriad little shops seething with tourists and pilgrims and filling your senses with exotic sights, sounds and smells. Dinner at local restaurant.

Day 8 KYOTO (Sun 26 MAR)

After a relaxing breakfast we will enjoy a visit Zen Gardens Daitokuji, a vast temple complex comprised of 24 sub-temples covering 23 hectares, almost forming a small village of its own. The karesansui, or dry rock gardens, at Daitokuji, are inspiring and beautiful. We visit also the Silver Pavilion (Ginkakuji) in the north-east of Kyoto, perhaps the pinnacle of the kind of Japanese aesthetic known as “wabi- sabi”, typified by restraint, elegance and a sense of transience. We follow this with a stroll along the stunning Philosopher’s Walk, a lovely canal lined with cherry trees. Afternoon at leisure – perhaps follow your escort to Nishiki food arcade. This evening, we enjoy a traditional dinner at a famous restaurant that has won 4 consecutive Michelin awards. During dinner we will be accompanied by a Geisha, who will perform a special traditional dance for us and with whom we can chat.

Today we visit JANESCO’s newest destination, Mihono Matsubara. Lying on the coast of the Miho peninsula this is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Mt. Fuji area. The 7 km beach, lined by deep green pine forests, with majestic Mt. Fuji as the backdrop is one of the iconic images captured in the ancient Hiroshige Utagawa ukiyoe woodblock prints. Stay at hotel where one wakes up with a view of Mt. Fuji. Enjoy Dinner at hotel.

After a relaxing morning we travel back to Tokyo and check in at the Imperial Hotel for 2 nights. The remainder of the day is free at leisure. Perhaps follow your tour leader to Omotesandou and Nezu museum. Dinner at local fine restaurant.

Day 11 TOKYO (Wed 29 MAR)

After a relaxing breakfast, we meet at the lobby to enjoy a slow paced walking tour beginning with a short metro ride. We will visit Chidori-ga-fuchi the moat of the Imperial Palace for cherry blossom viewing. Afternoon at leisure. Farewell Cocktail with a light dinner at a private lounge at the hotel overlooking the Imperial Palace at sunset.

Day 12 TOKYO (Thu 30 MAR)

Today is our last day in Japan, so you might wish to do some last minute souvenir hunting or an optional half day activity. Late afternoon, we check out from the hotel and leave for Tokyo airport by private transfer service.
